Lobangkara: The Painter Who Reached the Heavens

In the peaceful village of Kamasan, near Klungkung, there lived an extraordinary artist named Lobangkara. For him, painting was not just a skill but a way of life. Day after day, he poured his heart into his work, paying little mind to the world’s chatter or the passage of time. But while Lobangkara may have ignored the world, the world could not ignore him.

Word of Lobangkara’s unparalleled talent spread far and wide until it reached the ears of the King of Klungkung. Summoning Lobangkara to his palace, the king presented him with a monumental task: to design a palace that rivaled the splendor of Majapahit’s golden age. With determination and vision, Lobangkara set to work.

In just one month, the palace stood completed a masterpiece of architecture adorned with statues so lifelike they seemed to whisper their own stories. The king, awestruck by its magnificence, praised Lobangkara but sought to test him further. “If you can create such wonders,” the king declared, “surely you can capture my wife’s likeness in a painting.”

Lobangkara agreed, asking only for a glimpse of the queen. With a steady hand and keen eye, he painted her portrait, capturing even the subtlest details, down to the tiniest imperfections. When he presented the finished work, the king was amazed by its accuracy. Yet beneath his admiration simmered an uneasy envy of Lobangkara’s unmatched ability.

Determined to push the artist to his limits, the king issued another command: “Paint every animal of the forest.” Without hesitation, Lobangkara ventured into the wilderness. To his astonishment, even the fiercest creatures, the tiger, the deer, and the mouse deer approached him with a calm that allowed him to paint them with ease. Piece by piece, he brought the forest to life on his canvas.

Upon his return, the king’s curiosity was still not satisfied. He tasked Lobangkara with capturing the vibrant life of the ocean. Understanding the challenge, Lobangkara requested a hollow glass sphere that would let him explore the sea’s depths safely. Inside this globe, he marveled at the colorful fish and intricate marine creatures, immortalizing their beauty in his art.

When Lobangkara presented his oceanic collection, the king proposed his final test: painting the creatures of the sky. Lacking the ability to fly, Lobangkara voiced his concern. The king, undeterred, provided a large kite, confident that it would carry him to the heavens.

As the kite ascended, Lobangkara held on tightly, climbing higher and higher until he was but a speck in the sky. The villagers watched in awe as the rope connecting the kite to the earth snapped, sending Lobangkara into the vast blue expanse.

According to legend, the kite carried Lobangkara beyond the clouds, where he was welcomed by the gods. Enchanted by the beauty of the celestial realm, Lobangkara chose to remain, dedicating himself to creating art that even the heavens would admire. Lobangkara’s story is a testament to the boundless nature of creativity and the heights one can reach with passion and dedication. From the forests to the oceans and finally to the skies, his art transcended the physical world, leaving behind a legacy that inspires dreamers and creators to this day.

In the village of Kamasan, his tale lingers as a reminder that true artistry is limitless, capable of touching not just the hearts of people but also the heavens themselves.
